He was also a man who did not forget where he came from. In his lifetime, he had been imprisoned for his beliefs and had been exiled from the country.

In spite of all this, he never gave up his desire to make Cuba a better place to live in. His strength and determination were on full display during his speech at the United Nations in 1970.
